Growth in Colombian pig production requires demonstrated value
Connecting technical evidence, positioning and commercial development in a market where expanding activity calls for careful purchasing decisions.
Colombia’s pig sector poses a practical question for its suppliers: as the industry grows, why should a producer choose our solution for their next stage? For CEOs and commercial leaders in animal health, nutrition, genetics and equipment, answering requires understanding the customer’s business and making the value of the offering clear.
According to DANE, pig slaughter increased 15.6% year on year in the second quarter of 2026. Growth in head slaughtered does not, on its own, describe farm profitability or investment budgets.
Porkcolombia‘s price survey number 19, published in September, recorded a national average of COP 6,466 per kilogram of live pig, down 3.1% from the previous fortnight. These are sample averages, not universal prices or individual producers’ financial results.
Our commercial interpretation is that expanding industry activity can coexist with highly selective purchasing decisions. Suppliers should prepare arguments that help buyers assess a specific improvement and the conditions required to achieve it.
Choose the problem that warrants a conversation
“Higher productivity” can mean different things across operations. One farm may prioritize reducing variability; another may need to organize information or sustain capacity. Before launching a campaign, we recommend defining the segment, production stage, region and problem the business can credibly address.
That choice also guides commercial investment. A company introducing equipment needs to explain installation, maintenance and support. A genetics business must put its performance indicators in context. A nutrition supplier needs to relate its results to management practices and evaluation conditions. Expertise becomes visible in those answers.
Put the evidence in context
A prominent figure in a presentation may attract interest, but it needs an explanation of how it was obtained. When communicating a result, identify the metric, comparison, evaluation period and limits of application. Controlled trials and field observations should be presented with their differences clearly explained.
If an economic assessment is proposed, buyers should be able to recognize its assumptions and compare them with their own operation. An illustrative calculation needs to be labeled accordingly. A commercial promise gains credibility when the technical team can substantiate it and the purchasing decision-maker understands what is being assessed.
Understanding a region includes understanding its risks
In September, ICA reported classical swine fever surveillance in Arauca, emphasizing risk factors and biosecurity. That local context deserves attention in the commercial approach.
For suppliers, we recommend turning that context into responsible questions about the customer’s operation and coordinating communication with technical specialists. Animal health claims require evidence and technical review. Trust also comes from explaining the scope of available support and respecting each site’s procedures.
Prepare the team to continue the conversation
Positioning needs to translate into resources the commercial team can use. We suggest a page for each priority solution, a fact sheet with clear evidence and limitations, answers to common objections and an invitation to a relevant next step. This could be a technical meeting, a needs review or an agreed demonstration.
For international companies, preparation includes explaining who provides service in Colombia, where the channel operates and how support is coordinated. Each inquiry should capture the type of operation, its challenge and the person responsible for follow-up. Marketing and sales can then assess which content helps an opportunity move forward.
The same logic applies when reviewing campaign performance. A relevant inquiry that reaches the right specialist can reveal more about commercial fit than a broad increase in attention. The team needs an agreed way to connect content activity with the buyer’s next decision.
